The Myth of the “Paid Basher”

“I think you’re a paid basher looking for some cheap shares!”
InvestorsHub Message Board

Post anything mildly critical on a stock message board, and chances are someone will eventually call you a paid basher. No matter how cogent your argument, you will soon find yourself on the defensive, with your credibility on the run.

I am NOT a paid basher, I am not paid for posting anything on this or any other board. If marilynt claims I am a paid basher, I request that the proof be put on this board…I know if I accused a poster here of being paid to pump this stock, my post would be immediately removed. Posted by LoanStew on InvestorsHub

“Confessions of a Paid Basher”

To prove “paid bashers” exist, message board regulars will post this Confessions of a Paid Basher, allegedly written by a guilt-ridden employee of Global Calumny Funds in Stamford, CT. This confessed “paid basher” outlines how he is paid to manipulate stock message boards, and cites specific message board aliases such as Janice Shell. This article is held up as final proof of the paid basher conspiracy. But there’s just one problem…

It’s a Fake

The first version of the “Paid Basher Confession” was posted as a joke in November, 2000 to the Raging Bull message board by Steve Tracy, aka Firebird_1965. Tracy claimed to work for a boiler room operation in Stamford, Connecticut called Franklin Andrews Kramer & Edelstein. The ensuing frenzy prompted RagingBull to remove the post. However, it quickly migrated to other stock message boards and continues to wreak havoc to this day.

The post is linked to regularly from every stock message board. Here it is on April 18, 2007 on StockHouse.ca’s “BullBoards”. Here is the same post over at Allstocks.com. And here it is on Digg.com.

The original hoax is so specific, that its details now appear as referenced facts throughout message board culture. Notice how the pay structure details are noted in this “Bashers Handbook” on Stockhouse.ca. Or notice this poster’s reference to Mendacious Capital Partners. “Mendacious” is alleged to be hiring paid bashers, and is also located in Stamford, Connecticut. Look at the care that went into creating this website. But tell me, what sort of investment company would name themselves, “Mendacious”?

Why Paid Bashing Doesn’t Exist

There are only two possible profit motives of “paid bashing”: to short a stock or buy it at a cheaper price. But either explanation falls flat. Only microcap stocks are small enough to conceivably be manipulated by an online message board. But it is virtually impossible to find a broker who will allow anyone to short a stock under $5. Not only is shorting penny stocks closely regulated, but it seems obvious that brokerages would quickly go bankrupt if they allowed the practice.

As for the idea that an investment company would need to manipulate message boards to buy penny stock shares at a cheaper price, well, I find it deeply unlikely. I’ve followed these accusations on stock message boards for more than a decade, and not one ounce of proof has ever been produced. It is clear that the burden of proof is to provide evidence that such operations do exist, since there is only evidence that they do not.

Myth-Busting

  1. Gary Collins says:

Excellent read. I have been accused contrantly of being either a paid basher or a hedge fund manager on the UGHO.OB message board on Yahoo. Also, on RB. There is no end to it, and sadly, the average investor who reads these boards, will dismiss my posted facts, based on the accusations from the board pumpers and their personal attacks. A sad, but true fact. Very few if any of those reading the MB’s ever bother to call or email IR (if avaialbe!) or better yet, visit the operation. I flew to Newport Beach to attend a shareholders meeting for UGHO in October 2004, their first such event. Surprisingly to me, I was the only private investor in attendence! Everyone else were company individuals, or the toxic financing crowd. It was an overal joke, that played out over the years, culimnating with me selling my position for an overall loss of $268,000.00. I had the largest private investment in the company, and yet when I revealed pertinent negative information, I got clobbered. I did manage to get part of my investment out before the slaughter that continues to this day, and FWIW, I will eventually be able to utilize the loss to offset future gains.
In closing, thanks for a nice article. I plan on using it, with your permission, in the future.

I too have been accused, along with a couple others, on the CCTC.pk board. Morons there think just because you bash a sham stock that you are a “paid basher”. I am only posting there because several pumpers have been blatantly posting major lies to make the company sound good. I know for a fact the “bashers handbook” is a farce.

  2. Do you know who is OSG says:

Someone I once knew and worked with claimed to be “in the know” selling/trading/pimping stock options. He posted this exact same skit on Yahoo years ago. He is the one and only OSG of years past.

I know who he is in real life, and he is a “douchebag” with a fowl mouth.
He talks to himself to create the illusion of interest > to trick simple minded traders (mom and pop) into buying or selling. What a life (or lack there of).

He works for the phone co.

Actually it is no problem to short stocks under 5$ with a good broker, the stock price has nothing to do with being shortable or not, that 5$ threshhold is just another myth you might want to explore and wirte about. 😉
But yeah, to me paid bashing was always clearly not real, because if it was, I would be doing it all day, the best job in the world, get paid to mess around on finance boards.

  10. Unwitting Contributor to Wall Street Greed says:

To say that none exist is incredibly naive. Money is a strong motivator, and when shorts stand to gain handsomely by a price dropping in price, the unethical won’t hesitate to lie about the facts, and pay underlings to perpetuate the lies by bashing their targeted stocks. That can and does help get the price down so they can grab their profits from the honest, but unsophisticated, investors.

Please, don’t kid yourself and say that there are None, speaking in absolutes like that is simply a red flag that you have a hidden agenda, e.g.. to bash the targeted stock for personal profit and greed.

  21. Ron says:

“There are only two possible profit motives of “paid bashing”: to short a stock or buy it at a cheaper price.”

Incorrect. The Market Makers, DTCC, and brokers all have a huge profit motive to have certain stocks bashed. If they have a huge backlog of fail-to-delivers because of abusive naked short selling, they need people to sell their shares to cover. It’s not inconceivable that they would hire these individuals (some of whom seem to have nothing else to occupy their lives) to continually spew negative propaganda onto message boards to frighten people into selling. In fact, I would be shocked if they weren’t doing this.

“My boss has had my post deleted.

Look for news coming out of Andros Island, Bahamas this week. Evidently my post caused a panic with upper management. I have read some of the questions asked of me over the weekend. Sorry i can;t respond to them. All I can say is that I never met the people who hold the most power. Bashers work for a mule, or middle man. That mule goes between bashers and top tier management. We check in daily to the office where the mules work. There are 4 mules in that office. It is staffed 24 hours a day by one of those 4 people. When we check in, we must talk to 1 of those 4 people. If, for some reason the voice on the other end of that line is not 1 of those 4 people, we are informed to wipe the hard drive clean, destory the computer and leave no trace. We were all given computers designed to surf the internet without detection. We were told we were untraceable. I believe it because a disgruntled basher could do alot of damage not to mention the possible ramifications of a knock on your door in the middle of the night by the bosses you never got to meet, if you know what I mean.

My original computer has been destroyed. I’ve been told but can;t confirm that my network of mules and bashers has been taken in. I believe it because when I checked in Friday the voice on the other end of the line was not 1 of the prescribed 4. that tells me a raid had taken place and federal agents were on the other end of the line looking for information. The mules are loyal and may or may not have turned on the bigger bosses. It’s very possible that the bigger bosses were already known. Through conversations with some ofthe other bashers in my network I am under the belief that the offices on Andros Island in the Bahamas was raided, arrests were made and property seized. I also believe I am safe as the takedown was meant to cut off the head not the feet. It was also a strong message to others that they aren’t safe in their multi-million compounds based on offshore paradise islands around the world.

Evidently the size of the cash stash became too great to ignore and somebody in a very powerful government positons decided it was time to put an end to it.

For now I haven’t been contacted by authorities or anybody I knew personally at the network. They are either under arrest or on the run. I am meeting with the attorney provided by the network tomorrow. He has told me ont hephone to continue living my life as me and the other message boards crew members are not what the invetigation was going after. I guess that means I am out of a job.

    From what we were told

There was a company very interested in CMKX who wanted to pick up the claims for next to nothing. The short side of CMKX was ruthless. But what they never counted on was Urban continuing to run the A/S and O/S to unheard of heights. He was a prison guard for God’s sake. What normally happens is the company slowly bleeds itself to death after a reverse split or two. But Urban kept the market cap of CMKX extremely high by continuing to put new shares in the market and refusing to reverse split. This caused a serious dilema for the shorts who found themselves shorting and shorting but even at .0001, the 703 billion accounted for a $70 million value for CMKX and the claims that the clients of the shorts wanted for much, much less.

That’s where the struggle for power got out of control on both sides of the stock between the shorts, their clients and the company.

I don’t have all the answers

But in case you guys didn’t know, naked shorting a stock does not pay. A FTD is a terminal hang. You can’t collect on it. There are big companies and powerful people out there who pay for the service of the naked shorts to destroy competitors or to gain control of them for the lowest possible price.

And we are not allowed to trade in the stocks we are working. Our brokerage accounts are monitored through the network. I guess somebody could go outside fo that and try to conceala brokerage account but then that would mean we don’t have faith in ourselves. The shorts never lose why bet against them? Well up to now it’s been that way.

The current CMKX situation has gone well beyond any former fight I’ve seen.

    cbk-Like I said

Andros Island, Bahamas is where I hear some news is going to be coming from. U.S. authorities have sealed the media on this front but they can’t control foreign media and this is big enough that somebody will surely catch and release it to some sort of international medai outlet.

I don;t know this for sure but

If a short can come up with counterfit shares, why couldn’t they come up with counterfit shareholders to make a form 15 look false?

There was no other way to end this stalemate of shorting followed by more shares followed by more dumping. This would have gone on and on until one side blinked. 703 billion shares makes it pretty obvious both sides were not going to stop.

Revocation was obviously wanted by the shorts, not CMKX. That was a far fetched rumor by the longs on the board. The shorts are the ones who wanted CMKX revoked. The revocation is favorable to the shorts not the longs as the defense from the shorts is that the company was fraudulent to begin with thus reducing or eliminating their damages completely.

CMKX wanted to keep trading because that keeps the focus on the shorts being the crooks. The shorts had to get CMKX revoked. So did they counterfit shareholders along with shares to make the form 15 appear to be falsely filed?

That’s the question I’d want answered.

Don’t look for the company to talk

The news coming out from here on out is above the level of CMKX corporate updates on who is leading the company and where they have an office. That’s all immaterial junk. The big busts have started and will continue. There is going to be a huge power struggle for the money.

Look at it this way. There are millions if not billions at stake. If the NASD and the SEC don’t go after it then it’s obvious they were involved so they have to start filing charges against those they were working with. They will then settle those charges with the shorts getting a portion and the government getting a portion and then making some stupid statement like they put an end to the shorts illegal behavior. Some of that money will have to go to shareholders as hush money.

The amount is undetermined as nobody ever wants to part with money and lawsuits may have to be filed to ensure the money is handled properly.

But all parties will be wrangling for the bulk of this cash for a very long time.

Best case scenerio for shareholders is to see the SEC and NASD filing charges against anybody they can. That means settlements will be reached and money will be changing hands. That proves there is short money out there and then the key will be what proof has Urban been able to gather that will pull some or all of that cash abck to CMKX.

Urban can’t do or say much until he knows the money is on the table.
The shorts will want to twash their hands of this and move on quietly. Not sure what that will cost but a payday for shareholders is not going to come soon. The battle now is between the government that has to look like they are being tough on a practice they have allowed to take place for years and the shorts which are cornered from the looks of the NevWest bust.

I would need some more inforamtion to clarify it. I do not put any credence into any Paltalk speaker. Especially ones who want to name PCBM. Now, I can’t say specifically that PCBM was not shorted but from what I have been told, that one was simply a couple crooked businessmen who took shareholders for a ride. Shorts may have gotten on board and made some money on the way down but not naked short. Not every stock that goes down is attacked by naked shorts. PCBM had nothing that anybody would want or need to destroy. Didn’t they run something like a car lot? Sorry to burst a bubble here but PCBM sure didn;t have anyting that I would think a group would be willing to pay millions to get rid of. And wasn’t there a suspicious fire that destroyed all evidence and corporate records shortly after the SEC moved in?

Don’t get me wrong here, all I am saying is I did not see anything with PCBM that would make it a target for naked short destruction. Sometimes people like to just make an excuse for a bad investment. i know it may sound like my old bashing self here but not all pink sheet company failures are caused by naked shorting. Believe it or not, there are some shady business men involved in this market too.

If you want to determine if naked shorts are involved you need to determine exactly what the company has that would be so valuable to somebody else that they want them gone. If they don’t have anything you can be certain there are no naked shorts near it.

OT: As far as proof goes

If it was easy to get proof of a naked short then it wouldn’t be going on any more. It will only take one to expose them and they will have to do one of two things. Quit doing it or find a different way to do it.

The claims is all they have partner. Maybe Urban got a hold of some that even he doesn’t know the real value of. I’ve heard of many instances of rivals moving in on others claimed land to run secret samplings. Makes sense to me. If you have claims to millions of acres it isn’t like you build a fence around them. I could easily stroll in there and take a few samples without anybody ever knowing any different. If I find something, I offer you more than you paid for that land and the land around it. If you reject my offer than I have to pay you more or run you out of business than I can get them when they defaulted.

Urban moved the claims to ETGMF. Strange move unless there is a plan in place to get them back at some time. Maybe Urban was feeling heat. Who knows.”
